Consulting

Algirdas Makarevicius. Community Service: Consulting People Outside of Academia

Consulted and Assessed
Community service is a part of every teacher's job. It is voluntary work meant to serve people in particularly demanding areas. Through my consultations with young people from various professions, I shared my expertise and knowledge.

While researching the field of material design and business English in Australia, I also consulted students from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, and Japan, as well as local Australians. I helped them improve individual areas that needed strengthening, such as speaking, reading, listening, writing, grammar, and stylistics, at all levels of English language proficiency, from elementary to advanced.

I taught language and communication courses at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology in Lae. Additionally, I coordinated professional short courses through the Papua New Guinea University of Technology's Development and Consultancy Pty Ltd for over four years. I worked as a coordinator, organizing short courses and writing promotional brochures. I also gave short courses to people outside of academia, including company managers, high school students, secretaries, nurses, engineers, accountants, and teachers. I also revised and evaluated secondary school language syllabuses and assessed grade 12 essays for the Papua New Guinea Department of Education.

In Northern Cyprus, I taught education courses at the Eastern Mediterranean University. I evaluated the secondary school language curriculum for the Cyprus Department of Education, in addition to my teaching responsibilities.

In Oman and the UAE, I consulted students on various issues. I conducted extensive reading sessions in the library, helped edit articles in college English journals and portals, and established various English learning clubs, including Public Speaking and Extensive Reading. I also helped to improve individual areas that needed improvement for Foundation Year students.

Additionally, I volunteered to consult and assess English lecturers at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in Guangzhou, China.

Serving the community always yields greater benefits than serving oneself. Community service provides an opportunity to apply academic experience to real-life situations.
